Newbury, NH – (September, 2009) – As part of Mount Sunapee’s energy management program Mount Sunapee will be recycling glass, plastic and aluminum cans in the base lodges this winter.
“This will have a huge impact on our recycling program at Mount Sunapee,” says Base Operations Director, Bruce Dougherty. “This is the first year that we have been able to find a vendor in our area that is capable of handling our recycling.”
Mount Sunapee also recycles cardboard, scrap metal, vehicle oil and kitchen oil. Kitchen oil is converted to reusable fuel by Amenico, a New Hampshire company. The vehicles used by Amenico to pick up the kitchen oil are powered by straight vegetable oil (SVO). The resort also has installed low flush toilets and water-conserving sink faucets, converted to energy-efficient fluorescent light fixtures in all buildings, adopted a no-idle policy for busses in the parking lot and installed timers or light sensors to control lighting.
Mount Sunapee is purchasing another 10 HKD high-efficiency snow guns, bringing its inventory to 58 guns. These guns can produce twice as much snow at 27 degrees as older, less-efficient guns, while using only 25% as much compressed air per gun. These guns have allowed the resort to reduce its electricity usage by 14% over the past three years.
Biodiesel B-10 is used in snow grooming equipment and heavy equipment used for snow removal. Biodiesel B-5 is used to heat the base lodges and buildings.
Mount Sunapee is enrolled in the ISO-New England “Emergency Demand Response Program.” Mount Sunapee has agreed to shed 100% of its snowmaking load within 30 minutes should ISO-New England call an emergency between November and March. Mount Sunapee’s superior snowmaking firepower allows the resort to participate in this program without affecting the quality of the snow surfaces at the resort.
“Mount Sunapee’s energy-management program is constantly evolving as new products and opportunities become available,” says General Manager Jay Gamble. “Our goal is to reduce our total energy consumption, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and use sustainable and renewable energy sources when possible.”
